I don't know Jesmyn Ward's other books, but this one is not the one to persuade me to read them. I can only read it as a documentation of persons with which I cannot identify nor sympathize with. They thieve, for example, in situations where an honest approach could have been a workable solution. They are lazy: a clothesline has been hung wrong for many years. I am supposed to sympathize with the fact that they don't even have a useful clothesline? Just hang it right, dang it! Even these people could get their modest act somewhat together. Or am I supposed to understand that they have no self pride? Except that they do... It was 'interesting', in the emotionless way that reading a non-fiction report about anything could be 'interesting'; in this case, a report about desperate poverty in the UNited States, and how people cope with it. That's just about the story. Now to the writing. In an attempt to be somehow descriptive/creative/poetic, Ward spikes -- and I mean 'spikes' in the way that sticks out and pokes -- gratuitous metaphors that irritate like hard heels click-clacking on a soft-wood floor (yep, kinda like that metaphor). She provides details that, when seen on screen in a film, do provide some nice visual details, but in written form, reveal nothing about the characters nor do they move the plot forward. In one scene, it seems necessary to note that a bowl of soup brought to a person dribbled a bit onto a pot holder. Oy. ...... Since the person is not generally a soup dribbler and well... soup spills, you clean it up, no story. I was thinking that this book is very much like a whatsapp dialogue -- lots and lots and lots of detaily noise with almost no actual content...
I really loved this novel: touching characters, gripping development of plot, vivid language!If you love Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor give "Salvage the Bones" a try: a great southern novel!
